Explore the Southern Sierra – An Adventure from the Mountains to the Beach (2-6 days)

Here is an example itinerary and one of our favorite transitions from the mountains to the beach:

We begin by heading up to the northern sierra of Oaxaca. Having a hearty breakfast along the way, we arrive in the town of Llano Grade and meet our local guide for a 5 hour hike through the beautiful pine and oak forests of this amazing area. After the trek, we will head to Cuajimoloyas, have an organic lunch at the community restaurant, and explore this mountain pueblo. Here, depending on your interests, we can do another small hike, visit the women’s mushroom co-op, or zipline. Later, we will have another amazing meal and get settled into our cabins for the evening.

The second morning we being our drive to the southern sierra, stopping for breakfast along the way. We will arrive in San Sebastian and hike up to the amazing caves. After this trek, we will enjoy a homemade lunch and spend the afternoon either hiking or biking to the ancient tomb, or visiting artisans and a local mezcal maker in the neighboring pueblo. We will have another homemade dinner and settle into our cabins after enjoying a bon-fire underneath the stars.

After breakfast on the third morning, we will continue our trek through the southern sierra to the beach. On this day, we will visit an amazing waterfall. We will hike to the falls, and have time to explore and swim here. Once we are done, we will have a fresh seafood lunch and then head into Puerto Escondido.

In Puerto we stay at a wonderful bed and breakfast. We will get settled and head to our favorite local restaurant for a fresh seafood dinner and take a boat ride to swim with the amazing phosphorescent plankton - it literally glows in the dark!

On the morning of the fourth day, we rise early and head to the lagoon for a full day of exploring the labyrinth of canals by boat or kayak and witness the 300 species of birds and other wildlife that reside here. We will have another wonderful lunch consisting of the local delicacies and drop you off at your desired destination to relax and enjoy this beautiful tropical paradise.

The amazing scenery you witness on the bus ride to the beach is just waiting to be explored! Full of trails featuring waterfalls, caves, amazing vegetation and breathtaking views, the southern sierra of Oaxaca is virtually untouched! Explore with us as you head to the beach!
