Please let us know your wishes, and we will work with you to develop the adventure of a lifetime!

Birding

Oaxaca is home to nearly 700 species, with almost 100 regional endemics – the largest bird list of any Mexican state. The city of Oaxaca is located at the crossroads of several major biogeographic regions of Mexico, and its bird life is influenced by all of these. Sightings include the Dwarf & Slaty Vireos, Oaxaca Sparrow, Streak-backed Oriole, White-throated Towhee, Red Warbler, Grey-breasted Woodpecker, Rosita’s Bunting, Vermilion Flycatcher, Blue-capped Hummingbird, Boucard’s Wren, and the Bridled Sparrow. Birding combined with the rich cultural sites of Oaxaca and the unique vegetation of the Northern/Southern Sierra is a highlight for birders and non-birders alike.

Flora and Fauna

The state of Oaxaca has a great variety of vegetation due to its diverse topography, altitude, and climate. Depending on your interests, our local guides will lead you through tropical evergreen forests dominated by lianas and epiphytes of tropical affinity or provide you with a wealth of information on the various tree ferns, cycads, pipers, bromeliads and orchids found in the Sierra Norte.

Traditional Medicine

The ancient science of Curanderismo (traditional healing) is still practiced in modern day Oaxaca. Sessions with a local Curandero (healer) may be arranged for various ailments. Most commonly, these limpias (cleansings) use herbs such as chamomile, rue, rosemary, mint, thyme, oregano, mallow, violet, anise, and fennel to cure common ailments or to improve overall mental and physical health.

In addition, a Temazcal (sweat-lodge) may be arranged – either paired with a limpia and a massage for a full cleansing experience, or with a group for a traditional ceremonial experience.

Artisans

From silks and textiles to pottery and tin, Oaxaca is famous for its artisans. In order to provide you with an authentic and personalized experience, we have developed lasting relationships with artisan families who have been making these items for hundreds of years, and can take you directly to the source.

These artisans live in Oaxaca and the pueblos surrounding the city. It is a true one-of-a-kind experience and an honor to be invited into their homes to see how and where these items are created.
