This excursion begins with a beautiful drive to the oldest settlement of the Zapotec culture, Teotitlan del Valle. Here, we will have a traditional breakfast at the market and visit the home of a famous candle maker. These candles are part of a very old tradition in this community and are given to the women’s family, as a gesture of respect, when a man proposes to his girlfriend. From here, we drive to the town of San Juan Guelavia and visit the house of an artisan who is known for their beautiful basket weaving. We will spend time with the family and learn about the history of basket making and their weaving process. We will also have an opportunity to visit the local museum, followed by a scenic drive through the agave fields. Next, we arrive at the town of San Marcos Tlapazola, famous for it’s red pottery. We will visit an artisans home and learn about the process for making this beautiful pottery, a process that is only preformed by women in the community. This culture-rich day commences with a hearty lunch at a local restaurant and an opportunity to see the town of Tlacolula.
